Duke/Fluor Daniel Tuesday announced that it has been awarded a contract
by West Georgia Generating Co., L.P., a subsidiary of Sonat Energy
Services Company, to provide engineering, procurement and construction
services for a 650-megawatt dual fuel, natural gas and distillate
oil-fired power plant in Upson County, Ga. The power plant will be
designed to use four PG7241 (FA) gas turbines in simple-cycle operation.
The $180 million power plant, which will be built within the Thomaston
Industrial Park in Upson County, is expected to be fully operational by
June 1, 2000, providing electricity to serve the summer peak demand. A
significant portion of the electricity from the power plant will be sold
to Georgia Power under an existing power sales agreement. Duke/Fluor
Daniel's contract value was not disclosed.
"We are planning to design and construct a power plant for West Georgia
Generating Company with the high level of quality our customers are
accustomed to receiving, within the short time frame required for
commercial operation. We look forward to working with West Georgia
Generating Company, Georgia Power and Upson County to make this project
a success for all parties involved," said Clarence Ray, Jr., President
of Duke/Fluor Daniel. "We're pleased that we are able to provide value
to West Georgia Generating Company and Sonat Energy Services in this
way."
The groundbreaking ceremony was conducted at the site on March 25, 1999.
Engineering and procurement began earlier this year at Duke/Fluor
Daniel's office in Irvine, Calif.
The project will serve the growing needs for power in Georgia.
Duke/Fluor Daniel anticipates that the project will provide a peak level
of approximately 250 local craft labor jobs during the construction
phase.
