Fluor Corporation today announced that its client, Silterra Malaysia
Sdn. Bhd., was selected by Semiconductor International (S.I.) as a
recipient of a 2002 Top Fab Award, an annual recognition of the world's
best fabrication facilities.
Silterra Malaysia is a premier semiconductor manufacturing service
provider that offers customers leading-edge CMOS process technologies.
Its new 44,000 square meter fabrication facility, located in Kulim,
Kedah, manufactures LOGIC and ASIC devices on 200mm wafers. The facility
will reach its planned capacity of 40,000 eight-inch wafers per month in
2003. Fluor provided the engineering, procurement and construction
management services on this microelectronics project.
"It is no surprise that Silterra has been awarded this honor," said Bob
McNamara, group executive of Industrial & Infrastructure for Fluor
Corporation. "We have worked with the company from the start of the
venture, helping to manage the engineering and construction of this
complex project. Silterra's state-of-the-art facility enables the
company to help its customers quickly turn designs into quality
products."
"Silterra's contractors and suppliers made significant contributions to
the company's success in winning the award," stated Cy Hannon, president
and CEO for Silterra. "Fluor, our general contractor, had the expertise
to both design the facility and to manage the entire construction
project. We were impressed by the depth of their organization. Building
a world-class semiconductor manufacturing plant is an enormous task, yet
Fluor brought up the facility on schedule despite the aggressive
timeline. They have been very professional throughout the project and
were a great partner."
Silterra joins the ranks of previous industry-leading winners, including
AMD, IBM, Intel, Motorola, Infineon Technologies and others. Silterra is
not only the first Malaysian foundry to receive this honor, but it is
also the quickest to go from being a startup to being recognized for its
achievement. Since 1991, S.I. annually recognizes the best fabrication
facilities with its "Top Fab" award. The winning facilities are chosen
from a group of nominees by the publication's staff of editors.
